Vols’ Rashaan Gaulden out for season
Gaulden joins guards Marcus Jackson and Austin Sanders likely lost for the season because of training camp injuries.
Tennessee sophomore defensive back Rashaan Gaulden is out for the season with a broken foot, coach Butch Jones said after practice on Saturday. His bicep, his tendon went. He extended his arm.
“We’ll monitor his academics”.
If there’s any silver lining for the Vols, it’s that unlike Jackson, Sanders hasn’t been projected to start this fall.
The Thompson’s Station, Tenn. native played in 11 games last season for the Vols, primarily on special teams, and made seven total tackles.
Sanders is the second Tennessee guard to sustain a biceps injury during training camp. The Vols finished 2014 No. 13 in the SEC in yards-per-carry, struggling to pick up consistent yardage in the ground game even with five-star freshman Jalen Hurd and veteran Marlin Lane receiving the majority of carries.
Gaulden is a big loss for Tennessee, but next week’s expected return from sophomore cornerback Justin Martin should help the situation. “Obviously it’s another individual’s opportunity for some of the young freshmen to step up, in terms of Chance Hall and Jack Jones“, Jones said.
