Voltz expects to play Saturday (Badger football update)
This’ll be only their seventh game played so far this season.
The traditionally strong running game is chugging along in fits and starts. No one has run for more than 150 yards yet on the Husker D that’s allowing just over three yards per carry. Injuries have forced coaches to mix and match up front as if they were coordinating hockey line changes.
Defensively, the Boilermakers will face a Wisconsin offense that ranks 11th in the Big Ten in terms of rushing yards per game, but according to Hazell, the Badger ground game can become a concern if it is left unchecked.
The win moves Wisconsin to 2-1 in Big Ten play and 5-2 on the season. They’re just good kids and they want to do right by the team. “They’re in the right spots and are well-coached”, receiver Alex Erickson said.
Wisconsin may be playing well enough to win another western division title, but it seems unlikely that they can beat Ohio State, Michigan or Michigan State in the title game.
After struggling to capitalize in the red zone in the first half, the Badgers offense had another opportunity late in the third quarter to extend their lead. The Huskers might be 106th in the nation in total defense, and the secondary has been a hot mess, but Malik Collins and the run defense have been terrific. They gave up an average of 296 yards on the ground over the two losses.
The Badgers are coming off of a scare against Nebraska last week, barely edging out the Nebraska Cornhuskers 23-21.
Junior running back Corey Clement is said to be getting better after sports hernia surgery, but Chryst could not say when he could be ready to play again.
At Wisconsin, more so than most schools, a particular sense of pride permeates on the program’s ability to run the ball, to impose a will and wear down an opponent at the line of scrimmage. Purdue is 4-14 in home games under Hazell with two victories against Indiana State, a victory against Southern Illinois and a 2014 season-opening victory against Western Michigan.
BOILER DOWN: That lesson may have to wait for another day, though.
Quarterback David Blough scored on a 2-yard run and completed 15 of 26 passes for 136 yards as Purdue lost its fifth straight game and 12th in a row to an FBS opponent. Why Nebraska Will Win Don’t let the Purdue game fool you – the Minnesota offense still isn’t working. It is tough but nobody is in there pointing fingers, ” Blough said. “This new game plan that we have put together will make sure that we can operate at a high level of efficiency”.
Outside linebackers Joe Schobert and Vince Biegel draw the headlines for their pass-rushing prowess. Stave was sacked for a 4-yard loss on second and 10, however, and UW called its final timeout with six seconds left.
