Von Miller admits to illegally batting ball in Super Bowl
When asked by Weekend Update anchor Michael Che if was talking about football, the man who sacked Cam Newton 2.5 times as the Broncos trounced the Panthers 24-10 at Levi’s Stadium for a Super Bowl 50 win was slightly offended.
It’s only Miller’s admission of intent to King that gives it away as a play that should’ve been illegal.
That meshes fairly well with Ward’s description about the play that he delivered after the game.
But it seems the fumble should not have been recovered inside the Carolina 5-yard line at all, let alone have been Denver’s ball. Or perhaps it wasn’t even noticed by anyone at all – least of all the referees. (He majored in poultry science at Texas A&M.) Here’s how he describes the new discovery, which quickly takes a turn to fun shots at Newton. But Miller actually broke the rules on that play by batting the ball and the refs didn’t catch it.
It’s illegal for a defensive player to bat the ball back toward the goal line. He won Super Bowl MVP for spending the entire game harassing Cam Newton.
“I thought Cam was going to jump on it, but I guess, I mean, he didn’t want to dive down there on it”, Miller said, per King.
Shortly after this Miller would bat the ball.
Miller hassled Newton all game, never letting him get close to showing any of the form that made him the league MVP this season.
The ball lies on the ground, and Newton avoids it, and a pile begins to form trying to get it. Miller, from behind the play, tries to go for it too, but Newton is in his way. In fact, the Panthers quarterback was most heavily criticised for his reaction to Miller’s crucial strip.
Earlier, Miller also set up a Malik Jackson touchdown after forcing a fumble.
