Vonn skis to 16th Lake Louise victory
Lindsey Vonn completed her third treble sweep at Lake Louise in five seasons by winning Sunday s World Cup Super-G race at the Canadian piste to seize the overall points lead. Cornelia Hütter is second, 60 points behind, and Fabienne Suter is third, 80 points behind.
“Whenever you win, period, let alone by over a second, it definitely gives you that little bit extra boost of confidence”, Vonn told The Associated Press.
Vonn, 31, collected her 69th career World Cup victory, stretching her all-time record, as well as her 13th downhill triumph at Lake Louise.
LAKE LOUISE, Alberta (AP) – Another race at Lake Louise and yet another win for Lindsey Vonn.
“I felt like I carried some good speed”, Shiffrin said.
The American won all three races at the Alberta ski resort in both 2011 and 2012.
“I feel like I win here so often that everyone thinks it’s really easy for me and it’s not”, Vonn said. I feel really confident in super-G.
Larisa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., was 12th. “And I was lucky since all the favourites made mistakes”, commented Hirscher, who had only four days of super-G training under his belt. Her margin of victory in the downhills was just over a second Saturday and half a second Friday. The overall crown goes to the skier who earns the most points over all disciplines – downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom.
“That kind of helped because it pissed me off”, she said.
She is also up to third behind Mikaela Shiffrin and Lara Gut in the overall standings. “I have to go back to Europe”, indicating that she is looking forward to stronger results on more familiar snow surfaces.
“I was trying to be aggressive and trying to still ski solidly but nothing was kind of going my way”. “But that’s the thing with skiing – no matter my injuries or my mental state or personal life – I can always come back to skiing, and it always makes me happy”. This was the third time that she’s swept the weekend of racing in the Canadian Rockies, not to mention that she has scored 18 of her victories there.
She could not keep Vonn at bay, though, the American showing herself as a class apart as she surged to another impressive victory. “To have my first World Cup super-G out of the way, to know I can be top-15 and probably faster actually, I’ll lean more towards doing super-Gs and make sure I stay on top of my slalom and giant slalom”.
“I was slightly anxious for a second there that I was going to go out right before the finish, which I have done before”, Vonn said.
