Vonn wins World Cup downhill for 16th Lake Louise victory
American Lindsey Vonn skied to her second victory of the weekend at Lake Louise by taking victory in the Downhill.
The victory was Vonn’s 25th Super G World Cup success, the most by any female or male as she overtakes Hermann Maier who has 24.
One skier would still change the order on top of the race; Switzerland’s Fabienne Suter finished her run in second place, 1.05 seconds from Vonn. “I have to come with everything I have every day”.
Vonn, 31, is committed to racing three more seasons because she intends to compete in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea.
Vonn’s ideal weekend is the first one after her return to racing from a long series of injuries. “I think she’s going to be smart about it, to break the ice”.
Victory completes a clean sweep for Vonn in the Canadian resort, having claimed both downhill victories on the previous two days – cementing her place at the top of the overall standings.
“Even when she makes mistakes, it’s always in a part of the course where who cares?” She will definitely be a gold medal favourite in the women’s alpine skiing downhill at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. “I should probably not do that (Saturday)”. Like on Friday, Vonn destroyed Hütter’s hopes of a maiden World Cup win. “Obviously it depends on the course set and there’s a lot of variables, but I feel confident and I’m excited to try and get another hat trick”. She’s learning the nuances of a slightly altered Lake Louise layout as officials added more rolling terrain. At first I was slower than the others because I did not have as much training, and then I got better and better.
“I use my feel instead of my eyes”.
“I was slightly anxious for a second there that I was going to go out right before the finish, which I have done before”, Vonn said.
