Voter registration deadline drawing near

Two elections ago, brandishing pencil, ruler and printed voter lists as a volunteer-scrutineer, I was amazed to see my Conservative counterparts comfortably ensconced outside the polling station with laptops, using bar-code scanners to read their in-house, voter-coded lists, thereby instantly collating supporters’ – and nonsupporters’ – attendance.
