Walcott scores to start long road back for Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich
Theo Walcott gave Arsenal the lead in the 20th minute, allowing their fans to dream of a miraculous come-back, but Polish striker Robert Lewandowski equalised shortly after the break from the spot following a Laurent Koscielny foul.
“Wenger has spent a lot more years than them in the Premier League”.
The Chilean was dropped to the bench by boss Arsene Wenger for Saturday’s trip to Liverpool, belatedly entering the fray as a half-time substitute in the eventual 3-1 defeat.
By the end Bayern was threatening to surpass the 12-1 aggregate score it piled up against Sporting Lisbon in 2009 but had to be content with a 10-2 margin.
Amid a reported row with Alexis Sanchez, which Wenger denied taking place on Monday, the Frenchman has faced renewed calls for him to step aside from the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Sanchez is largely spared the vitriol others players have received for the mental frailties and meek surrenders – particularly in away games against major rivals – that characterise the late-Wenger era.
“I am absolutely revolted when I see an attitude like that and I am sorry for the people paying a lot of money to come and watch these kind of games”.
“We don’t take into consideration the advantage we have, it is important but the most important thing is to play well for 90 minutes”.
“What needs to change at this club?”
Pressed on whether he has “boxed himself into a corner” due to maybe needing the right spell of form to announce he is staying if he did decide that, Wenger responded: “Well I guess to take a bigger picture, you know”.
Wenger, however, claimed Arsenal are in “great shape”, despite suffering the second-worst defeat in Champions League history. “I hope that when Arsene decides he has had enough, he help make that transition a smooth one”, said Constantine.
“Of course we know Arsenal will try everything, but we have prepared intensely”. After that, it was very hard but the referee was very, very powerful for Bayern.
“We had a deficit of four goals and we were down to ten men”.
“It’s irresponsible from the referee. It’s absolutely unexplainable and scandalous”.
Mats Hummels sifted over the wreckage of Arsenal’s second-half performance against his Bayern Munich team on Tuesday night and suggested that sometimes it becomes preferable simply to limit the damage.
“Then when they went down to 10 men, we were very clever on the counter-attacks”.
Arsenal’s lack of apparent heart was pointed out by one of Wenger’s most experienced players before the match – Per Mertesacker told the media that his side was “not ready for a fight”.
