Walker, Ryan will be gone when Trump visits
Oklahoma Republican Jim Bridenstine, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, tweeted on Wednesday that he will not support Ryan – presumably, for speaker in the next Congress – because of Ryan’s failure to defend Trump. Ron Johnson and Gov. Scott Walker are all skipping the Monday events in Green Bay and outside of Milwaukee. However, looking at polling performances of candidates in swing states, it may not even be completely necessary.
But in almost 45 minutes of remarks to college Republicans, the closest he came to mentioning Trump was in describing the presidential campaign’s tone and warning students away from behavior that sounded suspiciously like things that have characterized Trump’s now flagging campaign.
Trump spent a large part of his campaign speech in Ocala once again discussing the leak of some Democratic e-mails by WikiLeaks, along with the special prosecutor he would appoint to investigate the former secretary of state, as per his remark to that effect during the debate.
Trump has two campaign stops planned in Wisconsin on Monday, but it’s not clear who will be joining him there. But it may be harder for the candidate to regain the dwindling support of his fellow party officials.
Ryan’s Friday policy attacks on Clinton were in stark contrast to Trump, whose meandering personal attacks have included highlighting allegations of sexual misconduct against her husband, Bill Clinton.
Ryan told the crowd he wanted to take a break from the drama on TV and twitter.
“It’s up to Mr. Trump to address these allegations himself”, Johnson spokesman Brian Reisinger said in an email.
