Walker tames Orioles in Mariners 5-3 victory
The stars were aligning for the Baltimore Orioles.
Seattle is 3-7 in their last 10 home games facing a team with a losing road record.
The improbable and obscure owner of that distinction takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners on Friday night as the 31-year-old left-hander brings a 23 2/3-innings scoreless streak into his start against the Baltimore Orioles.
“A sigh of relief”, Cishek said when asked how it felt to catch Pedro Alvarez swinging for the final out of the game.
“It’s a great team win, something we needed”.
The trio combined for 28 of the Orioles’ 56 June homers.
Walker (4-6) retired the first 11 batters of the game and had a shutout going through six innings.
He gave up his only run to start the inning when Hyun Soon Kim yanked a 1-0 fastball into the right-field seats for a leadoff homer.
As he rounded each base, Trumbo’s home run was not just his major league-leading 23rd home run of the year, but the 55th home run for Baltimore in the month of June, tying an MLB record. A leadoff walk started his problems and later led to a two-out run-scoring single from Kim. Alvarez struck out on a 3-2 pitch with a runner on first base to end the game. However, this Baltimore lineup is too good to keep in check in back-to-back games, especially with an inexperienced starter.
Nelson Cruz, who had two doubles and scored a run, said, “we have to play with a little chip on the shoulder”.
Braves 8, Marlins 5: Pinch-hitter Brandon Snyder had two RBIs in a four-run sixth inning to help Atlanta rally.
Wade LeBlanc (0-0 0.00 ERA) gets the call for the Mariners tonight and he will be making his 2nd start of the season. Trumbo readied and swung, watching the ball skyrocket into the left field bleachers, just above the Sycuan Casino sign. Walker skipped his last start due to a sore foot and was limited to five innings the last time he was able to pitch. The O’s will need three homers against the Mariners June 30 to equal that mark and four to break it. Robinson Cano leads the team in RBI and he hit.330 with four HR and nine RBI in June.
Schoop walked, but was still on first base with two outs.
Machado extended his hitting streak to nine games with the single.
NOTES: Baltimore activated C Caleb Joseph and RHP Vance Worley from the 15-day disabled list, selected RHP Chaz Roe from Triple-A Norfolk, sent C Francisco Pena and RHP Oliver Pena to Triple-A and placed LHP T.J. McFarland (left knee) on the 15-day disabled list. Wilhelmsen adds a fresh arm to the bullpen, with RHP Donn Roach being optioned to Tacoma on Thursday. Didi Gregorius, who had the winning home run Wednesday night, hit a solo shot in the fifth to tie the score after Shin-Soo Choo homered to lead off the game.
