Walmart Is Launching Its Own Apple Pay Competitor
Walmart is looking to launch its own payment feature called “Walmart Pay”, an app that will let customers pay for shopping at Walmart using their phones, reports Reuters. After the camera is activated, the user can at any point in the checkout scan the code that is displayed at the register to make a connection to Walmart Pay.
Wal-Mart said the service will also allow adding other payment options such as mobile wallets in the future. Acknowledging the crowded landscape, Eckert said Walmart Pay is designed in a way to work with other solutions and perhaps accelerate what to date has been a tepid pace of consumer adoption.
Just because companies are rolling out mobile pay systems doesn’t mean people are using them, though. “The result is an innovation that will make the ease of mobile payments a reality for millions of Americans”, he added. Thus the company has produced its Walmart Pay as a solution that works across devices, operating systems, and payment types. In November, LG Electronics announced the development of its own payment service to take on similar services from competitors, including Apple Pay, Android Pay, Chase Pay and Samsung Pay. While Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay compete with each other, Walmart Pay isn’t going to enter their game anytime soon. Features including checking in and picking up an online order, refilling pharmacy prescriptions and finding an item’s store location.
The US largest retailer informed that around 22 million active users use the Walmart app each month.
“We are creating a seamless shopping experience that includes payment”, Neil Ashe, president and CEO of Wal-Mart’s global eCommerce, told reporters.
This process is completed when an employee at the store scans and then packs the products.
The retailer will expand it to test markets across the country after the holidays, and it will be rolled out nationwide within the first half of next year, executives said.
To use Walmart Pay, you have to be in a Walmart checkout lane.
The Wal-Mart app is already one of the most widely used retailer apps among Google Android and Apple iOS users. At the end of the transaction, the app generates an eReceipt.
