Warner Bros. is reportedly in talks to reboot The Matrix
Whether Warner Bros’ plans and those of the Wachowskis are one and the same plan is not yet known.
The Matrix was acclaimed among the film community for its visual and sound effects imaging which gave the movies its iconic futuristic look.
That does present a problem for the new Matrix, of course: How will any reboot manage to capture the same feeling of being just slightly ahead of the curve that the original had? Which could be a bit of a problem if you’re hoping that the original cast would be returning for the film too.
Keanu Reeves, who played Neo, indicated his desire to come on board for another “Matrix” movie if the Wachowskis will be involved.
Zac Penn, who wrote the story for Last Action Hero, X-Men 2 and The Avengers, is in talks to write a treatment.
The Wachowskis, who wrote and directed the original and its sequels, are now not involved. Rumor has it that there is interest in getting Michael B. Jordan, who starred in the much-reviled Fantastic Four reboot and the Rocky sequel Creed as the titular protagonist. Perhaps we’ll get to see a Morpheus origins story?
Also starring Hugo Weaving, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix sees computer hacker Neo discover that life as he – and most other people – knows it is actually an elaborate facade created by a cyber-intelligent race.
According to the trade, this may not be a direct reboot, with the film possibly looking to expand the existing universe a bit like what Lucasfilm are doing with the stand-alone Star Wars movies.
It’s been less than a decade since the Wachowski Sisters first loaded up the simulated reality of The Matrix but it seems that Hollywood has already decided it’s time to reboot the system. But if Warner Bros is truly looking to go the route of Star Wars perhaps we will see a prequel film dedicated to another unbelievable character. At a time when studios are rushing to capitalize on any name-brand property they can think of, The Matrix was surely too good to resist.
