Warrant Issued For Presidential Candidate’s Arrest for ‘Criminal Mischief’
Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein is accused of committing a criminal act Tuesday after she spray-painted a bulldozer at a construction site for the Dakota Access Pipeline.
“This needs to come to an end”, Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier said at a Tuesday news conference following the protest, urging tribal leaders to address their grievances in the courts.
Morton County Police announced on Facebook on Tuesday that they have issued an arrest warrant for both Stein and Baraka. One possible charge could be for trespassing and another for vandalism, though it’s not yet known whether these would be felony or misdemeanor charges. The sheriff said he withdrew his officers from Tuesday’s protest because he said some protesters wore masks and carried hatchets.
No law enforcement personnel were present Saturday when violence broke out between private security guards and protesters. No arrests were made for either incident.
“This is not the way to protest”, Kirchmeier added. “We will pursue charges as needed”, he said.
Tribal Chairman David Archambault II said the pipeline poses a threat not only to sacred sites, but to the millions of people who depend on the Missouri River for water.
The Green Party’s presidential and vice presidential candidates were charged for pulling a stunt usually committed by juvenile delinquents – they spray painted graffiti on a bulldozer. The judge will rule on the Standing Rock Sioux tribe’s bigger challenge to the DAPL this Friday.

Native American protestors and their supporters are confronted by security during a demonstration against work being done for the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) oil pipeline, near Cannon Ball, North Dakota, September 3, 2016. Stein tweeted about the vandalism charges, even quoting a tweet showing footage of her spray painting a bulldozer. Fellow third party candidate Gary Johnson – and running mate William Weld – are at 8.4 percent.
Stein says the real outrage should be reserved for what she calls the big money corruption of the American political system, and says polls show she deserves a place at the upcoming presidential debates.
