Warren Beatty calling for official Oscars statement about Best Picture mix up
“Moonlight” won the Best Picture award at the Oscars on Sunday night, but not before the honour was mistakenly given to “La La Land”.

Movie buff John Axford followed the Oscars at a Mesa-area restaurant Sunday night long enough to learn that La La Land had won, as he’d predicted it would. Shortly thereafter, once the “Oscar-winning” team from Damien Chazelle’s musical had taken the stage, chaos set in when a do-over gave the coveted statuette to the producers behind Moonlight.
Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali were named Best Supporting Actress and Actor for their roles in Fences and Moonlight. Beatty explained that he was handed the wrong card, which read “Emma Stone – La La Land”, and that he wasn’t trying to be amusing when he hesitated and then gave it to Dunaway to read.
At a politically charged awards with repeated references to the U.S. government’s controversial policies on immigration and proposed wall with Mexico, Oscars history was made in other ways.
Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won the award for Best Foreign Film for The Salesman, but was not on hand to pick up the award as he protested Trump’s Muslim ban. She very deservingly took the award for the best supporting actress home!
“I want to say thank you to Mr. Trump”, Kimmel said.
Even people who weren’t actually in attendance delivered meorable speeches. “God, I love Moonlight so much!”
Since La La Land was nominated as Best Picture, Georgie said the movie stars assumed they had the card identifying the correct film.
McCraney said, “It was hard to say all the thank-yous we had to say, but at the same time it showed the camaraderie and love we have for both of the films”.
But those moments were overshadowed by the chaotic finale to the Oscars. I was like, I don’t know what’s going on, help me out! Maybe I have to think more of myself. Let’s remember, it’s just an awards show. And so I looked up at the stage and saw Jordan’s face.
