Warren makes case for Clinton, derides Trump as selfish
“When we turn on each other, we can’t unite to fight back against a rigged system”, she said.
President Bill Clinton, watching from the audience, leapt to his feet and applauded, as did most of the delegates filling the convention arena.
Michelle Obama provided an emotional highpoint when she cast the race as one between a positive role model for children in Hillary Clinton and a damaging one in Donald Trump.
While Sanders had endorsed Clinton previously, his remarks Monday marked his most vigorous and detailed praise of her qualifications for the presidency.
Following first lady Michelle Obama’s rousing speech, Warren did not land the same number of heavy applause lines, but she did rile up the crowd occasionally with her criticism of the GOP presidential nominee.
Campaigning in North Carolina, Trump seemed to revel in the Democrats’ commotion, telling supporters that Clinton made a mistake by not choosing a more liberal running mate to appease Sanders’ base. As the convention opened, they still erupted in chants of “Bernie” and booed Clinton the first several times her name was mentioned.
“That’s Donald Trump’s America”, the MA senator and progressive favorite told a cheering crowd of delegates at the Democratic National Convention. “And a vital part of that movement is making absolutely sure Hillary Clinton is our next president of the United States”.
“Bernie Sanders totally sold out to Crooked Hillary Clinton”, Trump tweeted early Tuesday morning, calling out the Leftist senator’s alleged hypocrisy in now supporting Clinton. “I thought in volume it was tamed down tonight, so it played well to keeping everything in a civil tone tonight, but she hit all of right points that she had to hit as far as everything that’s wrong with him”.
“We don’t need weaker rules on Wall Street. Let’s get to work”.
In addition to that, U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark appreciated Warren’s strong support for Clinton.
But the delegates here do seem ready to come together, if only to defeat Trump.
“America faces a choice”, Warren pointed out to a divisive-sounding crowd.
“They want us to fall in line and get behind Clinton”, said Dianne Fowler, a delegate from MI who was wearing blue tape over her mouth that read: “Silenced by the DNC”.
Warren, a senator from MA and a rising star in the Democratic Party, described the choice faced by voters in November: “On one side is a man who inherited a fortune from his father, and kept it going by cheating people, by skipping out on debts, a man who cares only for himself”.
Warren told The Boston Globe Sunday evening that despite not getting the VP nod, she plans to “put every ounce of her energy” into electing Hillary Clinton and reclaiming the majority in the US Senate in November’s election.
Discussions between the Clinton and Sanders camps prompted him to send emails and text messages to supporters asking them not to protest. Trump posted on Twitter Monday.
