Warriors agree to deal with Anderson Varejao
Anderson Varejao, with a future first-round draft pick was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers from Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for a future second-round pick.
When the Cleveland Cavaliers traded Anderson Varejao to make room to acquire Channing Frye, the last place they thought he’d end up was with Golden State. The 33-year-old failed to get significant playing time in Cleveland this season after returning from a torn Achilles tendon, averaging just 2.6 points and 2.9 rebounds in 10.0 minutes. The Blazers promptly agreed to waive Varejao despite the two years and almost $14 million in guaranteed money left on his contract after this season.
Enter Varejao, a 6-foot-10, 273-pound Brazilian who in 12 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers racked up career averages of 7.6 points and 7.5 rebounds to go along with a wealth of playoff experience.
The Warriors are not looking at Varejao as a huge offensive contributor, but “Wild Thing” can be a pest defensively off the bench and contribute 20 minutes or so a night. Theoretically, the Warriors were the team that had everything, a team that didn’t need a disruption.
Kerr doesn’t believe it will take Varejao long to get feel for the what the Warriors will do. The Warriors are banged up at the center position with Festus Ezeli out after arthroscopic knee surgery and Andrew Bogut missing the teams last game with an Achilles injury.
“Golden State Fans, excited for the opportunity do join you!”
“There were seasons we played well together, and there were seasons we struggled together”. The Warriors have close to a ideal roster for the system of basketball they play, and this has led them to being dominant in the Western Conference and atop the rest of the league.
“We gone’ be speaking Portuguese on the court”, Barbosa said, with a smile. He added, “The Warriors, I’m told, are still in fact-finding mode, but are weighing the pros and cons of pursuing Varejao after he clears waivers”.
