Warriors chase history, teams chase Warriors in stretch run
Who won? The guy President Obama said has a prettier shot than Golden State’s Steph Curry: Warriors guard Klay Thompson.
The Golden State Warriors are representing the Bay Area in a HUGE WAY, all-the-time, but especially in this year’s NBA All-Star Festivities. Currently, they’re on pace to break the Bulls’ 72-10 record from the 1995-96 season.
As probably many expected, it came down to Curry and Thompson.
Last year, Curry made 13 straight and finished with a score of 27. “I didn’t think he was going to miss”. Minnesota Wolves Zach LaVine won the Verizon slam-dunk contest and Minnesota Timberwolves’ Karl Anthony-Towns won the Taco Bell Skills Challenge.
Thompson was happy to take the victory and acknowledged that an off night from Curry was not something often seen.
But on Saturday, Thompson took down Curry in the 3-Point Contest one day after being starstruck during his second All-Star Weekend. Curry hit his first seven shots in the final before fading (by his standards, anyway) and finishing with 23.
When it comes to cherished, long-held records, Michael Jordan isn’t exactly the 1972 Miami Dolphins. He was traded to Sacramento on draft night, played in 179 games for the Kings before being waived and has had stints since with Chicago, New Orleans twice and San Antonio.
“We don’t want to have any records like that broken off us, so it was a contested shot”, Green said, smiling. Then Thompson showed why he’s second in the league in three-pointers made.
With the Western Conference nearing the 200-point mark and final seconds ticking away, Curry and the Thunder’s Kevin Durant engaged in a brief conversation near half-court as the Eastern Conference defense backed away. I’m one of them.
The three Warriors will get the chance to all share the court today in the actual All-Star game.
The Warriors’ team play has been credited for their excellent showing so far this regular season with players like Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala, Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut also playing major roles.
Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh was originally listed as a participant but withdrew, even from the All-Star Game, because of a lingering calf injury.
Said Thompson: “It was just fun because we have friendly trash talk between each other, and it’s all lighthearted out there”. Have a tip? Email him at devine@yahoo-inc.com or follow him on Twitter! “He makes me that much better”.
Silver says the National Basketball Association has data showing that coaches are using the “Hack-a-Shaq’ strategy more than five times what the norm has been in the past”.
“I love it”, Curry said.
No, the Warriors don’t exactly need MJ’s permission to continue tenderizing the opposition to a historic degree, and no, this doesn’t necessarily constitute Jordan admitting that this year’s Warriors are a better team than his Bulls, or anything like that.
