Warriors inch toward National Basketball Association history
To them, it must already feel like they have.
The win lifts the Warriors to 14-0, tying them with the 1957/58 Boston Celtics (14-0) and 2002/03 Dallas Mavericks.
Thompson put together his most complete game of the season.
Guard Jimmy Butler had a game-high 28 points to go with nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals for the Bulls (8-4), who had opened a four-game trip with a 103-97 win at Phoenix on Wednesday night. No doubt Cool Head Luke has been remarkably adept in maintaining a championship team’s equilibrium and drive, never losing poise when the Warriors fell behind the Clippers by 23 points, relentlessly imploring the players that they could win as they gradually completed a comeback that mesmerized a sports nation.
Things certainly looked bleak in the first half, and any aspirations of the Warriors breaking the record for most consecutive wins to start the season seemed lost.
Green had nine rebounds and five assists, but only scored nine points on 3-of-8 shooting during Friday night’s game. It was encouraging to see the Bulls play well with the champs (even in the SEGABABA for Golden State), but it does make you wonder if the bench could gotten a few more shots to drop. That set the stage for Barnes’ heroics at the finish.
Harrison Barnes added 20 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors in a game featuring 18 lead changes and 17 ties.
The Warriors trailed by as many as 11 in the first quarter before rallying into a 50-47 lead at halftime.
Honestly, if they were ever going to lose a game, it should’ve been last night on the road versus the Los Angeles Clippers. Against the Los Angeles Clippers, the Warriors used the small lineup to outscored the Clippers 39-26 in the fourth quarter and erase their 23 point lead. “But it was great having him”. The numbers get even more mind-numbing from there. “But by the time the game started, he wasn’t with us anymore”. “But I know this and I agree with Steve that we need to watch his minutes”.
By half time the lead was down to 14 and it was in the fourth quarter when Golden State found their groove and silenced the home fans at Staples Center.
“It’s a motivational tool for us”, Warriors backup Shaun Livingston said of the season-opening streak.
Quote of note: “The schedule is insane right now, in the next two weeks we really have to get a few grit”.
LeBron James said it best: the Warriors might be one of the hungriest teams in the league right now, and they are the defending champions!
In the end, the Bulls became another Warriors’ victim.
“It’s a no-brainer”, he said.
Green refused to reveal any dirt that might beat this killer lineup, saying with a mischievous grin, “I don’t know, I’m not trying to give a secret away. But it’s kind of silly”. He was also helped out by Kirk Hinrich, who was starting in place of Derrick Rose who is out with an ankle injury. Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala scored 15 and 12 points, respectively. Over on the other bench, the Bulls were a poor bet so far, with a disappointing record of 4-7 ATS. Butler made no secret he was looking forward guarding Curry. I think the character we have is going to show in the next two weeks. They are 20-year-old kids and I love coaching them.
