Warriors move to 22-0 by pulling away from Nets
The Golden State Warriors maintained their incredible unbeaten start to the season after seeing off the Brooklyn Nets 114-98 on Sunday.
But that may not be the most striking thing about watching Curry in person, right now.
A minute after Shane Larkin’s three-pointer gave the Nets a 75-70 lead, Curry hit a driving bank shot for a 76-76 deadlock. A three at the end of the quarter by Curry, and suddenly the Warriors led, 87-80. He entered Sunday leading the league by averaging 32.6 points per game. This means that IN don’t have to worry about anything to do with endless switching at the tail-end of a game, or dealing with 5 three point shooters at the same time.
MINNEAPOLIS – Damian Lillard scored a team-high 19 points and C.J. McCollum chipped in 17 as and Portland came back from a 17-point deficit to top Minnesota.
Klay Thompson added 26 points for the Warriors, and Draymond Green had 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists. A win against IN on Tuesday would give them the best-ever road start.
Curry spent three of his childhood years in Toronto, chucking up shots at the Air Canada Centre while his dad Dell played for the Raptors. “I love Lionel. He was the best”, Luke Walton said. Curry spoke on the team’s success this year saying, “Twenty-one different challenges and we’ve been able to separate each one individually and figure out different ways of winning”.
Golden State shot 51 percent and made 14 of 33 3-pointers while getting a standing ovation from most of the fans at Barclays Center after the final buzzer. Kyle Lowry was great for the Raptors, but DeMar DeRozan (5-of-19 from the field) really struggled.
Golden State bolted to a 9-0 lead and led 30-16 after one. “We battled, scratched and clawed, but they just stayed with their game”, Hollins said. “It just shows how good of a team we can be”. “We understand if we do something that’s never been done in history there’s something special about it”.
Brook Lopez had a chance at the end of regulation to win that game at Oracle Arena but missed a go-ahead tip in.
They trailed just 83-79 with a quarter left to play, and scraped out a one-point lead with just under five minutes to go on a spectacular sequence that saw a Lowry three-pointer, a DeRozan layup, and a Lowry layup.
GS’ all-world guard poured in 44 points, including 9 of 15 from beyond the arc. “So we just needed a little life”.
Control the three-point line, control the game.
The players wore specially designed T-shirts during warmups and on the bench and the Raptors welcomed a number of special guests, including former National Basketball Association stars Isiah Thomas and Bob Lanier along with worldwide soccer star Didier Drogba.
Charlotte’s Nicolas Batum scored 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter go guide the Hornets to a 102-96 win at Chicago. Houston’s James Harden scored 31 points to lead the Rockets past Sacramento 120-113 and to a third straight win. As Steve Nash put it, Curry is the most skilled player in history.
The Brooklyn Nets will not be the first team to beat the Golden State Warriors. Walton said starting forward Harrison Barnes is improving from a sprained left ankle.
Rod Black, Jack Armstrong, and Leo Rautins recap another close game between the Raptors and Warriors as they marvel at the play of Steph Curry and Kyle Lowry, and continue to worry about Toronto’s slow starts.
The Thunder won their fourth straight home game.
The Raptors host Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.
