Was American Swimmer Ryan Lochte Really Robbed in Rio?
USA swimmer James Feigen told a Texas newspaper that he remained in Brazil on Wednesday after a judge there ordered him and teammate Ryan Lochte not to leave.
A Brazilian judge has ordered the seizure of American swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen’s passports, after they allegedly provided conflicting reports regarding their claims they were robbed at gunpoint by muggers during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, Lochte’s father told the wire service his son had returned to the United States before the order was issued.
A Brazilian judge ordered two US swimmers not to leave the country, according to court documents obtained Wednesday.
Lochte says that he and three team-mates were held up by muggers posing as police as they left a late night party in central Rio.
On his official Twitter account, Lochte said: “My hair is going back to its normal colour tomorrow”, in what appeared to be a tongue-in-cheek reference to changing his appearance.
According to Lochte, he and his teammates did not immediately alert police of the incident because they were fearful that they may get in trouble.
“They don’t believe his version of events, so there will be an inquiry”, the source said.
Another surveillance image from the Olympic Village shows the four swimmers returning after the alleged robbery smiling and fooling around with each other. “It is a matter for our consulate and U.S. citizen services and we will continue to cooperate with all involved”, USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky told USA TODAY Sports.
Police have found little evidence so far to support their accounts.
Lochte’s attorney, Jeffrey M. Ostrow, tells NPR that the decorated swimmer is already back in the United States. The judge pointed out that both men “arrived with their psychological and physical integrity unperturbed”. Threatening the swimmers with guns, the men ordered everyone to the ground, Lochte told NBC.
Another potential issue highlighted by judge was the behavior of the athletes on arrival at the Olympic Village in the aftermath.
The US Olympic Committee refused to comment on the athletes’ whereabouts.
Some cite a “police official with knowledge of the investigation”, who said that police can not find the taxi driver or witnesses, according to The Associated Press (AP).
Scandal has struck Rio related to the robbery of two U.S. Olympic swimmers. But after a recent event that has gone down during his time in Rio at the Olympics, he’s the center of an even MORE super mysterious situation.
“And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, “Get down”, and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever'”.
