Was Anakin Skywalker Supposed To Be In Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is headed for the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office faster than any film in history after shattering numerous records since it began opening a week ago. It brought in a galactic $238 million in North America over its opening weekend, besting previous record-setter “Jurassic World”, and set global opening-weekend records in Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe. That means the J.J. Abrams-directed film has already earned $363.5 million domestically and $402.4 million overseas, a worldwide gross of $765.9 million!
Although Star Wars: The Force Awakens will definitely surpass Jurassic World in the long run – and quite possibly Titanic and Avatar, too (although that is a whole another story) – it will truly need a Christmas miracle to break one record that Jurassic World will appear to keep, the highest grossing film of 2015.
It did the same on Tuesday, adding another $37.3 million to its haul to beat the $35 million record previously set by another Marvel picture, 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man”. The media company spent more than $4 billion in 2012 to acquire LucasFilm, the creator of the “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” franchises.
The Walt Disney Co. said “The Force Awakens” crossed the billion-dollar mark Sunday, accomplishing the feat in just 12 days. “Concussion”, the Will Smith-NFL drama, took in $11 million, good for sixth place, followed by the financial-crisis saga “The Big Short”, which collected $10.5 million. You know, it was my first movie that I went to see with him.
Holdovers, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” and the Amy Poehler and Tina Fey comedy “Sisters” were just ahead, pulling in $3.4 million and $2.5 million, respectively. Star Wars Battlefront has been a hot seller this month and the release of the movie is now helping with that.
