Washington College in Md. to stay closed through Thanksgiving weekend
Washington College in Maryland announced Wednesday it will be closed through the Thanksgiving holiday while authorities continue searching for missing 19-year-old sophomore Jacob Marberger.
In a statement, school President Sheila Bair says based on their ongoing talks with law enforcement. The college campus will reopen on November 29th, with classes beginning the following day.
“Following the hard events of the past few days, Washington College will be canceling classes this week and the week of Thanksgiving Break”, Bair said.
As of Wednesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Maryland State Police had joined the search for Marberger.
Marberger’s disappearance caused Washington College to cancel classes and keep students in their dorm rooms Monday.
The college said it would be closed until “further notice,” creating a challenge for the school’s 1,450 undergraduate students, particularly those who participate in on-campus housing and meal plans.
“We want to thank the community for the outreach of support and offers of housing for students who are unable to return home”, the college said. He said Marberger purchased a box of ammunition.
Marberger would have faced disciplinary hearings at the college this week over an October incident, said college spokesman Michael O’Connor.
Marberger was a leader in student government on campus, the speaker of the senate, and a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. “The college acted proactively and took the actions that they did”.
