Washington D.C. Voids Parking Tickets Issued During Winter Storm Jonas
– If you’re one of the many drivers who was slapped with a $250 ticket for parking along a snow emergency route in the District last Friday as the blizzard approached, take a moment to rejoice.
NBC4 News reported, “The District issued $1,369,750 in fines for cars left on snow emergency routes-and towed nearly 700 of them, the city said….” Despite giving plenty of warning to Washingtonians to make sure their cars weren’t parked on snow routes, the administration is feeling forgiving.
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Thursday that citations issued for parking on snow emergency routes on Friday, Jan. 22 will be voided.
Plowed piles of snow block parking spaces on the roof of a parking garage in the Columbia Heights neighborhood following the weekend blizzard January 26, 2016.
Officials with D.C. Department of Public Works said there were 5,284 tickets issued during the storm, at a cost of $250 each, the paper said.
Danielle Smith complained to reporters that she and many drivers could not move their cars because the vehicles were buried under two feet of snow.
“Residents who have already paid their citations for violations that occurred on Friday, Jan. 22, will receive a refund”, the mayor’s office added. “This ticket dismissal is one small way that we can continue to help each other recover from the storm”. Residents had been warned of the coming parking ban a day earlier, long before the storm hit, but Bowser said the fines may have caught many off guard.
