Washington DC quadruple-murder suspect indicted on 20 counts
A grand jury has handed down a 20-count indictment against the man accused of killing three members of a prominent family and their housekeeper in their Washington mansion previous year.
An indictment was returned Wednesday charging Darron Wint, also known as Daron, with a total of 20 felony charges, including 12 counts of first-degree murder while armed, according to prosecutors.
So far, Wint, who once worked at a Savopoulous family company, has been the only suspect arrested in the murders.
Investigators found the remains of Savvas, Amy and Philip Savopoulos and housekeeper Veralicia Fernandez last May inside the charred home, which is located in northwest Washington near a number of embassies and Vice President Joe Biden’s residence. They include four counts each of first degree murder while armed in the course of a kidnapping, first degree murder while armed in the course of a burglary and first degree premeditated murder while armed.
According to the indictment obtained by WUSA, Wint held the victims against their will inside the mansion, stole $40,000 through extortion, killed them, then set the house on fire.
Wint was initially charged in only the death of Savvas Savopoulos.
He is also charged with kidnapping all four victims, plus theft, extortion, arson and burglary. Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Daron Dylon Wint in connection with the four murders, one of the most notorious crimes in recent memory in the U.S. capital city.
A D.C. police spokesman said Wednesday the investigation into the murders was continuing.
During the hearing, Abigail Savopoulos, 19, one of Amy and Savvas Savopoulos’s two daughters, sat in the front row of the courtroom, often writing notes.
Authorities believe Amy Savopoulos ordered the pizza on his behalf as he was holding the family hostage.
Wint was arrested about a week later, after police matched DNA to pizza crust found at the crime scene.
While authorities haven’t ruled out others being involved, Wint is the only suspect they’ve identified in the killings.
