Washington Monument closed again after elevator gets stuck
The Washington Monument is closed again due to problems with its elevator.
On Sunday, the elevator got stuck at 490 feet and about 50 visitors were walked down, a park service spokesman said.
The monument had been open only briefly Sunday after the elevator got stuck Saturday night, and dozens of visitors had to walk down the stairs to the ground level. Two employees and one NPS volunteer are on board.
The people, believed to be employees, reported they were stuck about 9:30 p.m., a spokesperson for the U.S. Park Police told WJZ in a phone interview.
The three workers inside the elevator along with the other visitors on the observation level were safely evacuated from the monument.
The park service says that was caused by computer issues associated with the elevator’s control system.
The elevator has been shut down 24 times since the Washington Monument reopened in May 2014 following repairs for natural disaster damage in 2011.
