Washington Redskins laments missed opportunities in loss to Packers
Unfortunately, their demise was foreshadowed by points left on the field in the first quarter as the Redskins were up only 11-0 instead of 16-0.
In the second half, the Packers’ offensive line took over the game. He didn’t have to resurrect his advice from previous year, when he and the Packers offense was looking as sideways as it did most of this season, and in the first quarter of this game.
And quarterbacks who are beyond getting rattled by pre-game hype and slogans, or in-game bad starts.
The loss ends what should be considered a positive step for the Redskins in their first season under general manager Scot McCloughan.
After Aaron Rodgers picked up a first down on his first play from scrimmage, the Redskins forced a punt thanks to decent pressure on the reigning MVP in the pocket. Rodgers was at his best, dropping footballs out of the sky and into the hands of his waiting receivers. Washington punted the ball right back after Jordan Reed had an unconventional drop on third down, but thanks to Tress Way had Green Bay backed up. Cousins started and played every game for the Redskins this season, with Colt McCoy, who served as his backup, appearing in two games in relief.
The Seahawks moved into position after Vikings running back Adrian Peterson fumbled a reception to give Seattle the ball in Minnesota territory.
Redskins’ pass rusher Ryan Kerrigan was flagged for an offside and an encroachment in the second quarter, in which Washington was outscored 17-6. DeSean Jackson caught a pass from Cousins and initially was ruled to have scored, but the points came off when it was ruled that the ball never crossed the goal line.
Green Bay at Arizona, 8:15 p.m. (NBC). Green Bay set about winning the game. On the first, Rodgers overthrew an open Randall Cobb who had beat Will Blackmon, while the latter saw Quinton Dunbar break up a third down throw to James Jones.
Cousins also became the first Redskins quarterback in franchise history to rush and throw for a touchdown in a playoff game.
The game was barely 4 1/2 minutes old when Washington led 2-0 on its first postseason safety since 1984. “It’s the way you need to play, and we’re going to have to play that way moving forward”.
“The main thing is everybody just needs to realize the taste they had in their mouth last time”, Packers receiver James Jones said. Just like that Green Bay only trailed 11-7. The play marked Green Bay’s fifth-consecutive scoring drive since the second quarter.
“We lost a lot of momentum in the second quarter for some reason”, head coach Jay Gruden said. Two plays later Rodgers hit Adams again in the end zone for a touchdown on a busted coverage from Dashon Goldson and Quinton Dunbar.
High fives, hugs and cheers filled the bar while fans eagerly watched the Green and Gold take home the win.
Tretter hadn’t played left tackle since his days at Cornell, but with no better alternative, he toughed it out for his team. He finished with four catches (on four targets) for 48 yards. Following a 19 yard burst up the middle from Alfred Morris, Washington was already on the edge of field goal range. Reed foiled Casey Hayward’s chance at a pick-six. “We had three cracks at it and ended up kicking a field goal, which is not good enough”.
But while Green Bay just hung up its sharpest offensive performance since September by some measurements, keep this in mind: Washington’s defense and Arizona’s defense have not been mistaken for one another at any point this season.
