Wasserman Schultz goes from favored to on the outs
Five years ago, Debbie Wasserman Schultz was put in charge of the Democratic National Committee to usher in a new era for the party.
DNC Vice Chair Donna Brazile, a veteran Democratic strategist who will lead the party on an interim basis after the convention, warned more leaked emails, and more apologies, could be coming.
“Going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as party chair at the end of this convention”.
“The Wikileaks emails indicate that Debbie Wasserman Schultz used DNC resources to assist her reelection campaign in violation of federal law”.
“I have decided that in the interest of making sure that we can start the Democratic convention on a high note that I am not going to gavel in the convention”, she said.
Trump dismissed the suggestion in a tweet: “The joke in town is that Russian Federation leaked the disastrous DNC emails, which should never have been written (stupid), because Putin likes me”.
He said her support for the Obama administration’s Iran nuclear deal has upset some Jewish voters.
Earlier Monday, mayhem exploded against Wasserman Schultz when she made her first public appearance after being forced out as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.
At least one national opinion poll showed Trump benefiting from a convention “bump” and pulling just ahead of Clinton, having lagged her for months.
Resistance to Clinton was on display during a demonstration Sunday as many thronged to a main thoroughfare and chanted, “Hell no, DNC, we won’t vote for Hillary”. Her supporters shouted them down, as Wasserman Schultz appealed for comity. Republican officials also had sought to minimize internal party divisions last week after Texas Sen. Wasserman Schultz carried on, defending her five-year party tenure. But while they and other Wasserman Schultz fans attempted to drown out the hecklers with applause and cries of “Deb-bie!” they were largely unsuccessful.
Trump cast himself as the law-and-order candidate in a nation suffering under crime and hobbled by immigration, as the GOP convention stuck to a gloom-and-doom theme. While Sanders has endorsed Clinton, she faces the task of winning over his backers as she battles Trump.
“What’s disturbing to us is that experts are telling us Russian state actors broke into the DNC, stole these emails, and other experts are now saying that the Russians are releasing these emails for the objective of actually of helping Donald Trump”, Mook said on CNN Sunday. The Clinton campaign opened up speaking spots for his supporters.
Clinton is within just days of her long-held ambition to become the party’s official presidential nominee. President Barack Obama will speak on Wednesday night.
Clinton, 68, a former first lady and USA senator, will be the first woman nominated for president by a major US political party.
While the government and Federal Bureau of Investigation haven’t officially pointed the finger at Russia, US officials briefed on the probe say the evidence so far points to groups known for conducting cyberintrusions for Moscow.
“I think under the circumstances, I think it would give those who opposed her fodder for disrupting this convention”.
