Wasserman Schultz Primary Win Seen as Almost Certain
Debbie Wasserman Schultz was ousted as chair of the Democratic National Committee in part because leaked emails revealed the DNC’s efforts to undermine the insurgent campaign of Bernie Sanders and protect establishment powerhouse Hillary Clinton.
Sanders, who endorsed Canova’s run against the former DNC chair in late May, stressed that the Florida primary race is important to his and his supporters’ so-called “political revolution”.
“In fact, Wasserman Schultz and no one from her campaign has ever responded to the debate challenge that Canova made back in April”.
Although Canova began as “a major underdog”, the Vermont senator contended, recent polls give Wasserman Schultz only a 46 to 38 percent advantage with just weeks left before the August 30 primary. On Tuesday, Sanders chose to do exactly that with an email blast to supporters with the subject line “Defeating Debbie Wasserman Schultz”.
The email added that Wasserman Schultz’s resignation created an “opportunity to transform the Democratic Party” into a more progressive party aligned with Sanders.
Mr. Canova, a self-proclaimed New Deal Democrat, is echoing Mr. Sanders’s campaign themes: railing against corporate money in politics and trumpeting his small individual contributions. But, Sanders’ support has given Canova a financial boost, and his campaign claimed to be within 8 points of her at the end of July.
The candidate challenging Wasserman- Schultz for her congressional seat filed a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint on Monday for what he says is a misuse of DNC resources.
It was, “unclear” whether her opponent, Tim Canova, would accept the invitation, the Florida Sun Sentinel Reported. A number of former Bernie staffers are working on Canova’s campaign. “We conducted the primary at the DNC according to the DNC rules”.
