Wasserman Schultz represented the 20th District beginning in 2004.
In a heavily contested fight for the Republican nod in Florida’s 2nd congressional district, which includes the eastern half of Florida’s panhandle, Neal Dunn narrowly defeated Mary Thomas and will face either Walter Dartland or Steve Crapps on the Democratic side; the two are separated by a little more than 100 votes.
Wasserman Schultz had 6,775 more votes than Canova with 100 percent of precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press.
Frances Skupsky, a retired office manager in Pembroke Pines, said she appreciated Wasserman Schultz’s efforts to help seniors in Century Village.
Wasserman Schultz is expected to win a sixth term in November in the state’s Democratic-leaning 23 Congressional District. Marco Rubio will face off against wealthy businessman Carlos Beruff – while on the Democratic side, Rep. Patrick Murphy and Rep. Alan Greyson square off to oppose the victor of the Rubio-Beruff race in November. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who endorsed Canova earlier this year.
She made no mention of Canova.
In the end, Wasserman Schultz’s troubles at the national level weren’t enough to damage her longstanding relationships in the Miami-area district.
A recent poll by the South Florida Sun Sentinel gave Wasserman Schultz a 10-point lead over Canova (50-40).
But Wasserman Schultz kept close tabs on her district and returned often, which paid off as she entered her election night watch party to a swam of hugs. The activist group Allied Progressive released an ad in Florida, hitting the DNC chair for teaming up with Republicans to defeat the policy.
