Shelton and Lambert, who had been at the CMAs together since 2007, announced their split in a joint statement in July.
Stapleton, who was the lead singer of the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers, was on the brink of tears when he won his third prize at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Underwood and Paisley then talked about the incredible collaborations set up for the evening, most notably Justin Timberlake with Chris Stapleton.
Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood kicked off the 2015 CMA Awards on a high note – with a song about 2015 and plenty of jokes. To his credit, Shelton waved and smiled at the cameras after Paisley’s comment.

The group also won for vocal group of the year, and performed their hit song about a “heart rush” for a fellow female that “ain’t slowing down”. It’s a case of young versus old and, if we’re giving the top honor to the most deserving, Bryan would win this for the second year in a row. “But I think he’s hot, don’t you?” It opens with the line: “I’ve got a girl crush, hate to admit it but …”
