Watch Gabriel Bracero Stun Danny O’Connor With “Knockout of the Year”
Gabriel Bracero, despite having beaten Danny O’Connor via decision in 2011, agreed to fight a rematch as the B-side of Premier Boxing Champions card in O’Connor’s backyard.
“That was the plan”, Bracero said of attacking the left-handed O’Connor with a right punch early.
It was evidently a scary scene of sorts, with O’Connor remaining down for several minutes and needing the attention of physicians while he was still in the ring.
■ Heavyweight Adam Kownacki (12-0, 10 KOs) won an eight-round unanimous decision over Rodney Hernandez (8-3-1, 1 KO).
Bracero spoke to O’Connor, in his corner, after the fight. “In my last fight, I fought a southpaw and I made a few mistakes and didn’t prepare properly”.
It was only Bracero’s fifth KO victory in 24 wins.
“I didn’t want the same thing that happened to me to happen to him”, Bracero told NBC “God Bless Danny O’Connor”. After I took that loss I went into a depression and, so in my mind, I knew I was coming in here to win.
In the co-feature, super bantamweight Jonathan Guzman floored Danny Aquino twice in the second round before finishing him off in the ninth.
“I didn’t understand how to handle the pressure; I’m not even sure I was aware of the pressure”, he said.
Bracero (24-2) has not won a fight in nearly 3 years, but was not lacking any confidence in the ring.
O’Sullivan (22-1, 16 KOs) punished Toribio (21-16, 14 KOs) in the first round and dropped him once with a left hook.
Junior lightweight Titus Williams (3-0, 2 KOs), from Elmont, New York, also had an easy night stopping Pennsylvania’s Arthur Parker (1-13-2, 1 KO) in the second round.
Argentina’s lightweight Fernando Saucedo, an experienced fighter with more than 60 career bouts, defeated Carlos Fulgencio of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in the second round.
