Watch How Astronauts Make Thanksgiving Dinner in Space
The astronaut did not forget to honor the hard work of his colleagues on the ground, the ones working from the ground in order to ensure the safety of all astronauts working on the worldwide Space Station.
The feast includes smoked turkey, candied yams (which have to be forced out of the package like toothpaste), rehydratable corn and potatoes au gratin.
While Boeing received its first order for sending a crewed flight to space in May, NASA awarded the second contract on Friday to Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Lindgren was seen peeling the foil container and revealed a peace of irradiated smoked turkey while pecking at its slice.
In a sign of how far things have come since the worldwide space race that helped make NASA what it is today, Kelly was launched to the space station in the Baikonur Cosmodrome alongside two Russian astronauts in March.
At least they’ve got a nice view.
Kelly and Lindgren showed the world what those on the ISS would be eating for Thanksgiving dinner in space.
And while it might be counterintuitive after such a long time spent in space, both Kelly and Lindgren expressed their gratitude for having been chosen to live the fantastic experience of being on the worldwide Space Station.
NASA has released a video from its global Space Station, sending laughs and warm wishes to Earth from space, and giving a glimpse at how this holiday will be celebrated from 240 miles above our home planet. So this is what I’m thankful for this Thanksgiving. “Since I’ve been up here, I’ve seen so many bad things that often happen down there”. The commercial space company also has a contract for cargo resupply missions to the ISS, however has been temporarily sidelined following the loss of its Dragon cargo vessel in June.
Especially Lindgren who was bound for earth on December 11th said that he missed his wife and children and was looking forward to seeing them after a long time.
Kelly is in the middle of a NASA mission called a Year in Space, where he and a Russian cosmonaut are conducting research on how long-term space travel affects the human body.
