Connor Cook left the game at halftime with an apparent shoulder injury, putting a bit of a damper on No. 14 MI State’s 24-7 victory over Maryland on Saturday.
Connor Cook did return for a second drive in the second quarter, but was mostly handing the ball off, clearly not comfortable throwing with that bad shoulder. After the game, Cook said he is healthy enough to play next week when the Spartans go on the road for a Big Ten showdown against No. 3 Ohio State.
Tune in for today’s MI State vs Maryland game if you’re a true die hard MSU fan as there are better games on the early schedule. The Terps defense came out aggressive as usual with a bevy of unique blitzes that eventually knocked Connor Cook out of the game.
To put the struggles of Saturday’s 24-7 win over woeful Maryland (2-8, 0-6) into perspective, MSU’s offense had the ball on five different occasions in Maryland territory in the second quarter – and managed just three points. MI State then added a field goal from 35 yards out to close the half, giving the Spartans a 17-7 advantage.
According to oddsmakers at MyBookie, MI State is favored at home, as the Spartans are getting odds of -15 points against the Terps.
After a long drive fizzled in the second half, holder Ryan Frain failed to get the snap down for Zalewski’s 49-yard attempt.
In the last churn of a meat-grinder series of games, the Maryland football team was the sausage again. He did not play in the second half, though. The Terrapins’ junior entered the game tied for first in the FBS with two punt returns for a touchdown, while his 18.2 return average led the Big Ten and was fourth in the country. The big play to get out of the shadow of their own goal post, was a play action strike to a diving Levern Jacobs for a 37 yard gain.
Mark Dantonio, on Connor Cook: “My sense was that he just didn’t have the velocity that he usually does on the football”. Coach (Dantonio) said, ‘We’re going to give the other guy a shot.’ It was kind of random.
Coaches at IL, Maryland and Minnesota are still trying to demonstrate they should keep their jobs. He returned to complete six of 20 first-half passes with an interception and no touchdowns. “It was great to get that first drive and go down and score and throw a touchdown pass”.
West teams combined to win four of five crossover games last weekend and are 6-5 against the East with two matchups left.
The Terps elected to use cornerback Will Likely in the slot on the very next play and Hills found him over the middle.
“I felt like I could have [played]”.
“G (Gerald Holmes), he played phenomenal”, said Tyler O’Connor, “He ran through arm tackles and put his foot in the ground and got vertical”.
The Spartans only ran for 141 yards, but Dantonio thinks it was a step in the right direction.
