[WATCH] Tear jerking reunion of lost cat Kunkush with refugee family
A “refugee cat” has flown more than 2,000 miles to be reunited with his Iraqi family in Norway, after getting lost in Greece.
The reunion was made possible by a dedicated team of volunteers and the power of Facebook.
Last week, their efforts paid off. Kunkush’s family, now resettled in Norway, spotted a story about their cat in The Daily Mail.
The family fled to Greece from their home in Mosul when ISIS conquered the city. Mosul is now controlled by Islamic State militants.
Upon embracing the cat, the mother cries, “Kunkush, my life!” But in the chaos on shore, their pet became frightened and ran off, The Guardian reports.
It was on this Greek island where they lost track of Kunkush, thinking they would never see him again. They were sure the family was further along on their journey into Europe.
The cat was transported to Berlin where volunteers worked to reunite him with his owners.
Amy Shrodes, an American nurse who organised medical care for refugees on Lesvos, was determined to see Kunkush fly to his family’s new home in Norway and bought the cat a £470 air ticket, with extra funds raised through an online giving page. “I felt strongly that if this family took such a huge effort to bring him with them, they must consider him a part of their family”.
“It wouldn’t be right to not give them a chance to at least know he’s OK, and even take him back if they’re in a place where they can”.
Incredibly, five weeks later – on Valentine’s Day – the family contacted volunteers through the cat’s Facebook page and confirmed they were his owners.
A GoFundMe page was set up to cover the expenses of reuniting the cat with his family.
And he quickly gather fans, with almost 5,000 supporters getting involved in the campaign.
