Watch the Perseid meteor shower peak this week

This is one of the best meteor showers of the year, not only are the meteors bright, but the weather is warm, making it comfortable to sit outside and watch, and this year should not disappoint.

“We have found that one meteor shower produces more fireballs than any other”, says Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office.

Throughout different parts of the year, Earth ploughs its way through the tail of the many comets which like itself are orbiting the Sunday.

The good news is that skies over South Yorkshire are set to remain clear overnight, giving a clear sight of the dazzling show. As the earth passes through the debris field left behind by the comet, that debris hits the atmosphere at an impressive 143,000 miles per hour and disintegrates in a blaze of light.

LAWTON, Okla._Grab your camera and chair, the annual August Perseid meteor shower is this week and the best viewing is supposed to be early Thursday morning.

Perseid meteors are bits of dust and ice from the Swift-Tuttle comet, according to NASA. “The moon will be almost new, setting the stage for a great display”.

Where to look to see the Perseids meteor shower. “(Thus the name of the meteor shower.)”. “It’s the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks on August 12th and 13th”.

This meteor shower is named for the constellation Perseus because the meteor streaks seem radiate out from it. The constellation will be in the northeastern sky.

The video begins at 10 p.m. Eastern time, and will continue until 2 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday.

“If you are outside looking at the sky you should see at least several dozen if not more per hour“, said David Targen, Dir. of Brown University’s Ladd Observatory in Providence.

Meteors don’t come in any kind of pattern – so you may see several and then have a long wait.
