TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) – Joey Logano has ended a almost yearlong losing streak with a victory at Talladega Superspeedway.
It was Logano’s third career win at Talladega.
Logano’s last victory was April 30 of previous year at Richmond but his auto failed inspection, the benefits from the victory were stripped and it cost him a shot in the playoffs.
It was the 100th NASCAR victory for Team Penske.
Kurt Busch finished second, Chase Elliott was third, Kevin Harvick was fourth and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was fifth.
A 14-car accident with 22 laps remaining at Talladega Superspeedway has eliminated many top drivers. Among those collected were Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron.
“The cars weren’t handling really good, so you had to be very cautious with the runs that you had and where you had them”, Johnson said.
There was some exciting side by side racing coming down the stretch in Stage 2, with Paul Menard and Denny Hamlin leading different lines and vying for the lead.
A big wreck knocked Kyle Larson, Erik Jones and Truex out in Stage 2, as Paul Menard went on to take the green-and-white checkered flag. The wreck took out the five-time Talladega victor Keselowski, who was considered a favorite to win at the Alabama track yet again. It is the first stage victory of his career.
“What a fast Ford”, Logano said in Victory Lane. Ultimately, Menard prevailed, winning the stage as six Ford drivers showed the way.
Ford and Toyota won that first strategy battle, as the Chevrolets had to pit with 11 laps to go in Stage 1.
Jamie McMurray has been in another crash at Talladega Superspeedway. Also something of a rarity: There weren’t any wrecks.
Menard elected to pit upon the restart and made way for two-time Talladega victor Logano once again. And not just the Team Penske Fords but all of the Fords out there-Kevin (Harvick), Kurt (Busch). The No. 41 Ford was strong and was a fixture inside the Top 10 all afternoon in this 500-mile battle.
Kyle Busch was penalized for speeding on pit road during the stops and restarted the race from the rear of the field.
