Water expert says high Flint readings no surprise
Barnhill said the residents’ immediate needs are important but that long-term opportunities in Flint will also be explored, such as small business assistance.
Federal legislators who represent Flint said this week that they would introduce legislation to spend up to $400 million in federal funds on fixing the city’s infrastructure provided the funds are matched by the state. The national infrastructure must be modernized with a new piping system, and Flint Michigan must become a model of what can be done when the federal government and state are transparent, partnering, and telling the truth. “You just can’t make this up”, Kildee said during a conference call late last week. “Many questions still remain regarding the state’s ability to manage this crisis and only highlights the need for a continued and amplified federal role”.
An activist group has filed a lawsuit calling on Flint, Michigan, to replace all the lead pipes in its water system. Soon after, a Hurley Medical Center doctor demonstrated it was likely that lead was making its way into the blood tests of Flint children. She says she yelled “How was your water?” Emails that were released Thursday revealed that employees at the state office in Flint have been drinking from coolers of purified water for a year.
Flint residents have been told to drink only filtered or bottled water because of lead contamination in the city’s supply. However, Snyder’s administration did not officially acknowledge the water was unsafe until last October, nine months after state employees in Flint were given the choice to drink from water coolers.
“We have provided it continuously”.
State regulators permitted Flint to not treat water for corrosion after the city switched its supply in 2014. He says Flint once was a “cornerstone of American industry”, and that people “from coast to coast” need to step up.
This week, he said he continues to puzzle over the things Flint residents have been told by local and state officials in the past two years.
There are, however, indications that the phosphates added to DWSD water have begun to recoat the inside of water lines, protecting the water from lead contamination. Sending tons of water bottles to Flint sounds like a good idea, but there is one big problem.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Prysby said there were only health concerns among the young, elderly and ill if they ingested trihalomethanes over a long period of time: “We’re talking decades”, he said. “There’s a lot of unknowns”.
The money will pay for bottled water, faucet filters, testing kits, additional school nurses, medical treatment and to help the city with unpaid water bills.
Officials urged all city residents to have their water tested and said results of that testing are now available in about three days. It was found that the levels of lead in some areas are so high that filters can’t separate it out.
Rachael DePauw said she’s done as much as she can to protect her daughters against the dangers of lead, repainting the walls of her 1930s home and trying not to track dirt inside.
