Water returning to normal color in Rio Olympic diving, water polo pools
The mysterious shade of the water, which contrasted sharply against the blue hue of water polo pool beside it, generated jokes about algae and dye on social media and overshadowed the women’s 10 meter synchronized platform final. The spokesperson said the crew probably needed to take into consideration that more athletes in the pool would affect the water unlike previous tests conducted before the games began had revealed.
“The only thing we said is don’t open your mouth in the water, just in case”, Benfeito said. Instead, the statement focused on the proximate cause: a lack of chemicals needed to treat the pools in order to prevent the algae buildup.
Rio spokesman Mario Andrada stressed during a press conference Wednesday that the pool’s pH and chlorine levels were within the required standards and that both pools were treated during the night, with alkaline levels improving.
“We expect the colour to be back to blue very shortly”. But a couple players said they could tell the chemical mixture is off.
“The water polo pool and synchronised swimming pool is also being affected in the same way”, he told reporters.
FINA, the worldwide governing body of swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water swimming, released a statement Wednesday stating they had determined the cause.
This sudden change of color in two of the Olympic pools nearly feels like a practical joke someone pulled on all of us, but an unsanitary pool is no laughing matter.
He said the water had not been monitored as carefully as it should have been and rain on Wednesday morning exacerbated the problem.
The organising committee of the Rio Olympics diving events claims that they have found a solution regarding the green coloured pool, even though it has remained the same till today.
“Yes, it feels like that, but I don’t know”, Zalanki said between sniffles. “Obviously, the people in charge of maintaining the pool and of checking could and should have done more intensive tests”.
