Waterspout damages USPS truck on approach to Sunshine Skyway
A few motorists caught an unbelievable sight on camera. It shows how the truck flipped over after the waterspout touched down on the bridge.
A waterspout is a tornado that occurs over water.
On Sunday, a postal service tractor-trailer was slammed by a waterspout that formed over Tampa Bay at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, sending debris flying.
Waterspouts are not unusual during this time of year, according to experts. “Occasionally, they can come onshore and can cause mainly minor damage”, said weather.com digital meteorologist Chris Dolce.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the rig driven by 56-year-old Randall Leaver was overtaken by the waterspout as it approached the Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay on Interstate 275. As the funnel cloud swept across the roadway, it lifted the truck and turned it onto its side.
The twisted mail truck’s driver was lucky to escape with his life.
The tornado also damaged a nearby construction site, knocked over signs and overturned a small boat, troopers said. Thus far, no injuries have been reported.
