Watson among Heisman finalists
Jackson has been the Heisman frontrunner all season, and has posted incredible numbers.
Mayfield, a quarterback, and his receiver Westbrook have been a dynamic combination, and late in the season No. 7 Oklahoma started a dual campaign to promote both. Each was named a finalist on Monday, with Watson earning the nomination for the second-straight year.
A redshirt junior, Mayfield has also been on the Heisman radar all season.
Mayfield and Westbrook are the fifth and sixth Sooners to become Heisman finalists in the 18-year Bob Stoops era and first since Sam Bradford in 2008.
Mayfield, who transferred to Oklahoma from Texas Tech in 2014, finished fourth in Heisman voting past year.
Peppers, arguably the best defensive player in the nation, serves in other capacities for MI, returning punts and kicks, while also spending some time at running back. His 12 offensive TDs of at least 40 yards are the most in one season by an FBS player since at least 1996.
Offensively, Peppers – who lined up as a quarterback, running back and wide receiver – rushed 27 times for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns. He threw for 37 touchdowns (as well as 15 interceptions) and rushed for another six, surely to exceed the 4,000-yard plateau through the air for the second consecutive season with another 86 passing yards in the College Football Playoff semi-final.
Though it was quickly deleted, the account that wants more than anything to showcase how great Louisville Football is, cast it’s vote for the upcoming Heisman Trophy.
Each player was invited to NY for good reason, but what specifically are they doing so well this season?
USC teammates Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush were also finalists that year, and Leinart won the award.
An injury in the Bedlam game on Saturday dampened his narrative, but Westbrook has had an incredible 2016 season with Oklahoma, setting all sorts of school records. The last three winners – Derrick Henry, Marcus Mariota, and Jameis Winston – either each got to participate in the College Football Playoff or competed for a national title after claiming their Heismans.
Mayfield finished fourth last season, but did not get an invitation to attend the Heisman presentation in NY.
Earlier on Monday, Watson was announced as the victor of the 2016 Chic Harley Award by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio.
