Wayne Rooney Concerned About Martial Injury
Rooney’s club team-mate Anthony Martial played well, before he was substituted in the 67th minute because of a foot injury.
Wayne Rooney then doubled England’s lead with a header in the 48th minute – his 51st worldwide strike.
He limped away “with his left foot bandaged after being injured in a tackle by Tottenham’s Dele Alli and France coach Didier Deschamps admitted he was in pain”, reports the Daily Mirror.
According to quotes in the Mail, Rooney said: “From a personal point of view, and from Manchester United’s point-of-view, I hope he is okay”.
Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is hopeful that Anthony Martial is not set for an extended spell on the sidelines. However, it is overall ability to run in behind defences and stretch the play that has made him a constant threat, and so a switch up front with Rooney playing behind could potentially give United an edge to their play.
Roy Hodgson has blooded a string of youngsters since taking over as England boss in 2012, including Jack Butland, Dele Alli, Harry Kane, John Stones and Raheem Sterling.
“But it is a world in which unfortunately if you want to keep your place in the team you have to be playing to a very high level especially when other people are doing well around you”.
“Is Martial indispensable? I do not think there is an indispensable player in this team”.
Given the emotionally-charged nature of the friendly against France, it was even more remarkable how Alli and fellow full debutant Eric Dier stepped up to the plate on Tuesday.
“They are two players who maybe haven’t had a lot of publicity in terms of their chances up to now but I think they are going to get a lot of publicity for their chances going forward”.
