Wayne Rooney: Goals will come for Manchester United
“When he scores goals you have to be modest”, the boss told MUTV during his weekly interview at the Aon Training Complex.
Depay scored two goals against Club Brugge in the qualifying round of the Champions League and should have had a hat-trick when Rooney made a brilliant lay-off inside the penalty box, only for him to flash it over the bar.
Manchester United manager, Louis Van Gaal, was really happy with Depay’s performance and said that he wants to kiss the winger after his 2 goals and assist.
“I had a much better game against Bruges, could have got a goal or two, but that’s football”. But for a trainer-coach, it’s different.
On the back of last terms final two month barren spell drawing blanks in the opening fixtures of 2015-16 against Spurs, Aston Villa and Brugge has heightened the pressure on the skipper.
“This is why the team needs a player who stays up there all the time”, he added. “These aspects are also important”.
“Memphis can become the complete player under his [Louis van Gaal’s] guidance”.
Rooney, who turns 30 in October, has not started a season as United’s main striker since 2011, but he rejected the suggestion that it may take time for him to re-adjust. “No, I obviously enjoy playing against Newcastle so hopefully on Saturday I can get off the mark and open my scoring for the season”.
“It is great to be playing with him, he can beat a man and he likes the attacking support from me as well – which is something I like to do”, the 20-year-old said. “He showed what he can do tonight”.
Real Madrid fans get excited about new signing… “You come to a big club and you have to do a good job again“.
“You can see the team does not have a proper striker”, said Gullit of Van Gaal’s United.
“He’s never satisfied”, he said. Then your desire to improve is higher – and that’s Memphis. “And that’s Memphis”. I lost the ball too easily and I’m aware of that. “We have played a couple of games together and I am starting to understand how he wants to play“.
Rooney’s last away goal came in United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates in November 2014. “But we were not lucky”.
When United host Newcastle tomorrow, Rooney will be searching for his first competitive goal for United since April 4, making it a nine-game drought going back into last season.
