Wayne Rooney rues “avoidable goals” against Newcastle United
London, Jan.13: Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes that Louis Van Gaal-led side can make it to the top four in the Premier League, but ruled out their possibility to claim this season’s title.
Van Gaal previously clashed with reporters last month when under increasing pressure to turn his side’s poor form around. “To then get our third goal and concede again was disappointing from us”.
In a pleasant change from the myriad of nil-all draws that Man United have had us endure this season, they drew 3-3 with Newcastle United last night.
“If you take a two-goal lead, we should be taking all three points and killing the game off”.
In the 42nd minute, midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum smashed an opening goal for Newcastle, followed by Aleksandar Mitrovic’s goal, who scored a penalty to level the score against United.
Mitrovic, who also found the back of the net on Tuesday, said it was an honour to play against a player he has idolised in Rooney. The referee gave a penalty and I think it was a duel – I have seen the video and you can see Mitrovic was pushing the head of Smalling. “Obviously we know that s our aim, that s what we work on every day at the training ground”. “Sometimes it’s hard, but on nights like tonight (Tuesday) we did it so we need to keep working and keep trying to improve”. McClaren said: “I think there’s a lot more to come from him”.
“I think you see that Chancel Mbemba handled the ball on objective, consciously, so that’s a penalty”, Van Gaal told reporters, as quoted by FourFourTwo.
The United captain’s superb 20-yard strike put the Red Devils back in front before Dummett’s late goal salvaged a point for Steve McClaren’s side.
A clearly frustrated and emotional Scholes said United’s players looked bored after a 1-0 cup win that “was not good enough”.
“There were big possibilities and when you lose two points, that’s very, very sad. We did it by ourselves”.
‘He is a legend and he has scored so many goals.
