Ways Bernie Sanders Dominated in December
Mr. Trump has a great capacity to use bluster and bigotry to inflame people and to make think there are easy answers to very complex questions…One of the best things that was done, and George W. Bush did this and I give him credit, was to reach out to Muslim Americans and say, ‘we’re in this together.
Clinton and Sanders, her closest challenger, entered Saturday night’s debate in the midst of one of their fiercest fights – about the campaign itself rather than a national or global issue.
Sanders won the readers’ poll for TIME Person of the Year, topping Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Pope Francis and other world leaders.
Clinton was referring to secret lists kept by USA intelligence agencies of those allegedly suspected of terrorism. Clinton’s supporters blasted Sanders, and the media portrayed his campaign as dishonest. The Democratic debates – two of which have been broadcast on the networks – have drawn less than half as many viewers as the Republican events.
The debate, hosted by ABC News and Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, was the third scheduled 2016 Democratic presidential debate.
I saw nothing on Saturday to shake my assumption that she’ll be the Democratic nominee. It came as Clinton has solidified her standing atop the field, shaking off a rocky start and the controversy about her use of private email at the State Department.
Even though the restroom contained multiple stalls, Clinton opted to wait until Lis Smith, deputy campaign manager for former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who is challenging Clinton for the nomination, was cleared from the room.
The gun control issue was pressed by O’Malley, who is far behind in the polls and needs to shake up a race increasingly tilting against him with six weeks to go until the state of Iowa holds the first nominating contest.
While there was broad agreement among the Democratic contenders that the U.S. should not launch a ground war to defeat the Islamic State, they differed in the tactics they would take and whether the nation should seek regime change in Syria, where IS has a stronghold.
Clinton joked about a similar problem in the previous debate where she barely made it back on stage before the end of a break.
Sanders said he had lost an election in Vermont for a gun-control stance and Clinton said she had backed gun-control measures. Bernie sanders at his best in early states.
On national security, he reiterated years-old criticism of her vote for the 2003 Iraq invasion, accusing her of being “too much into regime change”. But the billionaire businessman turned politician was not the only target of attacks during Saturday’s debate.
Sanders replied noting that similar data errors have happened in the past at least twice, and that his campaign dealt with them responsibly – and, unlike Clinton’s campaign, did not try to turn them into a scandal. Dammit, we were in the restroom for like three minutes, tops … and it’s a solid two-minute walk to get there and back in the first place.
The Democratic presidential hopefuls argued for what they see as a more measured but still forceful response to the Islamic State group and other overseas threats, promising a safer America but also one that upholds values of openness and inclusion.
