WBO Officially Strips Floyd Mayweather of Welterweight — Boxing News Update
Floyd Mayweather will be stripped of his World Boxing Organization 147 pound title today after failing to pay a $200,000 sanctioning fee before a 3 July deadline.
Floyd Mayweather isn’t frugal by any means, but with dozens of world title belts scattered around his home, $200,000 was a bit much even for a boxer nicknamed “Money” to pay for a title belt.
Chris Williams, of BoxingNews24.com, wrote that Mayweather, the sport’s biggest financial draw, is likely not sweating the possible loss of the WBO crown.
But the WBO have taken tough action and Mayweather has been forced to forfeit one of his belts.
It is an unfitting end to Mayweather at the end of his distinguished career where he has gone unbeaten in all of his 48 fights.
The WBO reiterated in a statement that, “No WBO Champion may hold a non WBO Championship in a weight class that is different from the weight class of his WBO Championship”.
After the victory over Pacquiao, Mayweather stated that he would vacate those titles and hold onto to the welterweight title he had just won. “It is time they fight for the belts”, he said.
“I watched that fight over and over again, and without being biased, in addition to the four rounds the judges gave him (Pacquiao), I gave him the second”, Arum said.
On June 27, Timothy Bradley Jr. won a unanimous decision against Jessie Vargas to win the vacant WBO interim welterweight title in a fight initially announced as being for the vacant full title – until Mayweather’s change of heart. “Both got fast feet fast hands & fast mouth haha…or relinquish the Title as you’re preventing fighters like me in this position to take on the other champions or the bigger names in sport!”
Floyd Mayweather is undefeated, there is no argument about that.
He is set to fight his final bout on September 12 against a yet-to-be-named opponent. After that the 38-year-old Mayweather has said repeatedly that he plans to retire.
