We’ll enjoy it but we must keep striving forward, says Gareth Bale
Ashley Williams has claimed that the Wales national team will carry their fearless attitude into the Euros next summer.
Wales finished their historic Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory at home to Andorra this evening, but it was not enough for them to top Group B ahead of Belgium.
Asked about Bale’s contribution to Wales’ successful qualification campaign, Coleman remarked, “The best players should be playing on the biggest stage and he is going to have that chance now”.
Coleman’s side qualified for next summer’s European Championship finals on Saturday night, despite losing 2-0 away at Bosnia & Herzegovina.
“I am disappointed because we lost, but these boys deserve this – it is unbelievable”, Coleman said.
“It has been a burden at times and that comes with a bit of pressure but they have dealt with that”.
But Wales will be celebrating whatever the score line after 90 minutes because Wales are already guaranteed a place in Euro 2016 following the outcome of the matches played on the weekend.
Coleman’s managerial spells at Fulham, Coventry and Real Sociedad clearly helped him come on as a manager and he showed a few real tactical knowledge as he put out sides with three, four and five men defensive formations but maintained the solidity, while his eye for detail in preparation proved invaluable.
It was Gary Speed who was credited with setting in motion the revival in the fortunes of Welsh football that has culminated in qualifying for France with one match still to go.
Bale looked to take the initiative from the restart, and he went close early on as he powered a shot from a tight angle, forcing a smart save from Andorra goalkeeper Ferran Pol. I don’t know. To be honest, I am happy to play anyone over there.
The last time they qualified was way back in 1958 at the Federation Internationale de Football Association World Cup in Sweden.
The feel-good atmosphere inside the Cardiff City Stadium was punctured in the fifth minute when a sickening clash of heads between James Chester and Victor Moreira left the Andorra midfielder prone on the turf. Even as a kid and a Welsh fan, we kept missing out, so for us to finally do it, there is a lot of emotion involved.
“It’s everything – it’s something I always dreamed of growing up but never thought I’d get to”, he added. “We want to win every game”, said Walcott while admitting that Hodgson’s men faced relatively weak opposition in the group and much sterner tests lie in wait in the finals in France.
“I’ve wanted this not only as a player and a manager but a fan, as a child growing up”, he said.
