We now have someone to blame for the Oscars best picture snafu
“For the past 83 years, the Academy has entrusted PWC with the integrity of the awards process during the ceremony, and last night we failed the Academy”.
Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty mistakenly announce La La Land as the best picture victor when it should have gone to Moonlight.
Tim Ryan, US chairman and senior partner at PwC, told Variety magazine that Brian Cullinan, one of two accountants responsible for the presenters’ envelopes, gave Beatty the wrong one as the Hollywood star took to the stage with Dunaway.
La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz was well into his acceptance speech when the embarrassing gaffe became clear. The one he had announced La La Land’s Emma Stone as victor for best actress, which had been given out minutes before.
Warren Beatty, the Dick Tracy star was given the job of announcing the victor of the category alongside his Bonnie and Clyde co-star Faye Dunaway.
Boone Isaacs has not yet commented publicly in any detail about the best picture bungle. The “In Memoriam” segment included the photo of someone who’s still alive, and in January, when the Academy Awards were announced, Amy Adams was listed instead of Ruth Negga in the Best Actress category on the Oscars mobile site.
In fact Moonlight had actually scooped the prestigious accolade at the 89th Academy Awards.
Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel said afterwards: “He was confused because the card, which he showed to me by the way, said “Emma Stone, La La Land” on it”. Presenters Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway were apparently given the wrong envelope. When we were sitting there, and that dream of winning didn’t come true, I took it off the table.
“Even in my dreams this can not be true”, Jenkins told the crowd. And if you pay close attention to the video, you can see the wrong category written on the envelope.
Deeply regretting the mistake, the Academy saluted the “tremendous grace they displayed under the circumstances”. It won three Oscars. Damien Chazelle also won Best Director for “La La Land” making him the youngest director to win the award at age 32. Craziness breaks out. No one knows how Beatty got a best actress envelope; Stone later tells reporters in the media room that she has been holding her envelope the entire time.
Best Animated Feature: Zootopia won this award. The maker boycotted the ceremony to protest Donald Trump’s immigration policy.
