‘We want him involved’ Hiddink plans new role for returning Chelsea legend
The Montreal Impact lent credence to the rumors on Wednesday, confirming that the club is in talks with Drogba and Chelsea over the player’s future.
New Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink avoided specifics about Drogba on Wednesday at his first news conference in London since replacing the fired Jose Mourinho.
“But he still has a contract with Montreal in the MLS, even though it is the close season for them now”.
Drogba made the move to the United States in July on a designated player contract for two seasons and scored 11 goals in 11 appearances for the Impact.
Drogba is under contract with Montreal through the 2016 season.
He was accompanied by owner Roman Abramovich and former Chelsea striker Drogba, sparking rumours that the Ivorian would be brought in as the new assistant manager.
“We are now in contact with Didier Drogba and Chelsea FC”, the club tweeted. Hiddink later said he hoped to get the Ivorian involved in some way with the team. Drogba, a club legend, is reportedly being offered a position on Hiddink’s staff or as a club ambassador.
Montreal say Drogba has expressed a “desire to help” his old club.
“He’s a legend already in this club”. They give the Chelsea brand a big image, worldwide. “Drogba’s heart is with Chelsea”. “The only thing is that in this moment he is playing in Montreal”. Chelsea sits 15th in EPL standings with five wins, three draws and nine defeats, 20 points behind surprise leader Leicester.
