WEATHER: Bitter cold and snow headed for Mason City
Those under wind chill advisories have our northern neighbor to thank for the frigid cold, Schultz said.
Very cold temperatures combined with high winds threaten to plunge most of MA into a deep freeze this weekend with the National Weather Service warning of wind chills as low as minus 20 to 30 degrees – approaching 35 below zero in some higher elevations.
The arctic blast will hang over the Island on Sunday-meaning Valentine’s Day revelers will have to bundle up to enjoy the festivities.
Tonight: Cloudy, some snow showers, but accumulating a snow coating of 2 inches over Cape Cod. Wind chill values as low as -37.
“Wind chills and temperatures will reach dangerously cold levels”, the NWS states. Boston’s record daily low on Sunday is minus three degrees, and the current forecast is already minus four degrees.
In addition to the brutal cold air, snow squalls will be possible across the Midwest and the Northeast Saturday morning with generally light accumulations.
Temperatures dropping to 5 below and winds of 5 to 15 miles per hour mean wind chills in the 20 below to 25 below range. Clouds will break into the night with lows around 1. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 31.
Monday: Snow likely before 4 p.m., then snow and sleet likely. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent. Right now it looks like snow is possible Monday night before changing over to rain Tuesday as temperatures soar through the 40s. A trough of low pressure will bring snow showers to portions of the Upper Midwest and the Ohio Valley. Partly sunny, with a high near 25. Lower visibility with blowing snow will make these squalls risky to drive through, especially as some will be happening through the evening commute.
