Weather: Storm to bring light snow, then rain
In all, more than 75 million people from the Midwest to the Eastern Seaboard are expected to get walloped by snow and freezing rain into Tuesday.
“We’re not going to see a whole lot of snow with this storm”, Kines said. Freezing rain will continue into this evening. Winds will die down during the day Sunday, and the wind chill advisory that had been in effect expired at 9 a.m. The temperature should rise to about 20 degrees. On Tuesday, we’ll be soggy but warmer, with highs near 60.
A grab bag of weather conditions – including snow and sleet – will descend on communities from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast.
WBAL reports that the NWS Winter Weather Advisory expects accumulation to reach between two and four inches of snow and sleet, with precipitation turning to rain by late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Ice accumulation around a trace.
This is a hard storm to predict because temperatures will hover near freezing for much of the two days, and even a couple degrees could mean the difference between snow and rain. “Ice accumulation of a 1/2” or more is possible.
Chilly Saturday: Although it’ll be very sunny, temperatures won’t make it out of the 30s. “Also, you’ll stay all snow, all the moisture available should fall as snow for you guys”.
All rain across far southern and southeastern Virginia.
Tuesday Night: A chance of rain before 8pm, then a chance of showers after 8pm. Because it has been so cold lately, it will take some time for this to happen. Around 1-3 inches of snow may accumulate before any switch to other forms of precipitation. Snow likely before 4 p.m. Snow and freezing rain between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. followed by sleet after 1 a.m.
Another cause for concern is the potential for rain to come down heavy at times on Tuesday. There could be some freezing rain closer to I-81, especially in the higher elevations. It will officially kick-off Sunday morning and last through Monday morning.
Overall, the weather could have less of an impact because schools and many workplaces will be closed for the federal holiday, and traffic should be lighter than usual, according to the Associated Press.
