Webb solid in Cal debut, Bears beat Hawaii 51-31 Down Under
The opening play of the 2016 college football season was just unusual.
It’s winter Down Under, but at the tail end of summer here it’s finally time for football, the season that matters most to bettors and Las Vegas sports books.
There’s probably no bet to be made on tonight’s “gridiron” – that’s what they call in football in Australia, where this is game being contested – matchup.
There will be a lot of travel for both California and Hawaii here, but the Golden Bears have the benefit of not playing in the second week of the season. The Bears were led by the exploits of senior transfer Davis Webb, who finished with 441 yards passing and four touchdowns.
It will be almost impossible for Cal to replace a quarterback like Jared Goff. Goff led Cal to an 8-5 record last season. In Rolovich, the Warriors are hoping they’ll get a return of the success they had when his old coach June Jones was running the show in Aloha Stadium.
Nick Rolovich is one 18 head coaches in the FBS who’ve returned to lead their alma mater.
Freshman wide receiver Kumoku Noa’s older brother Kanawai is a sophomore wide receiver at Cal. Kumoku was a first-team all-state receiver at Kamehameha in 2015, while Kanawai was a two-time all-state receiver for Punahou before appearing in all 13 games for Cal in 2015 as a true freshman at receiver and on special teams.
The Bears have won eight of their past 10 season openers and three of four under coach Sonny Dykes. “I’ll give that a shot”. New offensive coordinator. New quarterback. After Cal went up 14-7 on a Hansen 19-yard catch from Webb, UH again came right back with an electrifying run 53-yard touchdown run by Saint Juste. “Webb should be a solid replacement for Goff in Dykes’ system”, Parkila said. “Defense has always been a concern for the Golden Bears, and their experience is slim with just five returning starters”. Defensively, Hawaii is allowing 51 points and 630 yards per game. Control the clock and demoralize California’s defense by smashing their lacking front seven in the mouth. Cal came into the contest without their top six leading wide receivers form a year ago, but appear to have found a weapon in junior Chad Hansen who made a big impact in the contest with 14 receptions for 160 yards and two touchdowns.
